The Watch of the Week – Review of the Citizen CA0421-04E

The Citizen CA0421-04E is simple yet stylish. I have to say that I am in love with the blue accents on the case of this watch. This particular aesthetic isn't new by any stretch of the imagination, but when I do see it, it always grabs me. Of course, it doesn't help that blue is my favorite color. The watch in general is very reminiscent of many other citizen watches, but this isn't a necessarily a bad thing – there is a reason that Citizen is the largest watch manufacturer in the world. I think that they have a formula of what works and a deep understanding if what their consumers really want in a watch.

The neon blue chroma accents look great against the polished stainless steel case. The main crown is protected by a crown guard, and flanked by the chronograph pushpieces at 2 and 4. Adding to the sporty look of this Citizen men's watch is a black rubber strap with a textured feel. Securing the strap to the watch is an ardillon clasp made from stainless steel. Made for daily wear, the Citizen CA0421-04E carries a 100 meter water resistance. The case dimensions on this watch are 44mm for the case diameter, and 11mm for the case height.

The dial is black with blue accented and rhodium toned applied indexes. The hands offer a similar aesthetic but are also luminous for exceptional readability during low light conditions. The dial features 3 subdials – at the 6, 9, and 12 positions. The subdial at the 6 position displays the continuous seconds, while the counter at 12 reveals the chrono-seconds. At the 9 position is the 24 hour register. Finishing off the dial is a date aperture at the 3 position. To be honest, there is one complaint I have with the Citizen CA0421-04E, and that is I would've liked to see a tachymeter along the flange. To me, it would have been more in keeping with the racing theme (as this watch is from the Drive collection).

Powering this watch is a precise Japanese made quartz movement, fitted with the Eco-Drive technology. This means that you will never have to change the battery as it keeps on getting a charge from light. This is achieved using photo-voltaic cells on the dial.
